Teaching Tolerance Award Coming Soon!

We'll begin accepting applications and nominations on November 1!

We’re excited to announce that we will begin taking applications and nominations for the Teaching Tolerance Award for Excellence in Teaching on November 1! Our biennial award recognizes five educators from around the country who excel in preparing students to thrive in a diverse democracy. You can apply or nominate someone you know.

One of our 2016 winners, Leslie Wills-Taylor, teaches and advocates for students at Woodbrook Elementary in Charlottesville, Virginia. Here’s what she had to say about the award.

Why should teachers apply for the TT Award?

It is an incredible honor to represent an organization that intentionally seeks to illuminate education’s most pressing issues. The award affirms your professional body of work but also may validate your personal stance as to why you have dedicated your time to serving the dynamic needs of diverse populations.

How did winning the TT Award change your teaching practice?

I am an avid consumer of Teaching Tolerance’s pedagogical tools, lesson plans and reflective readings. As a result of the award, more individuals were compelled to collaborate with me while using TT as the starting point for planning. I collaborated with our school counselor to create a co-teaching plan.

How did the TT Award affect your students?

My students were excited to highlight our classroom practices. They understood that their classroom was a safe place to express their cultural views and to model acceptance for one another.

What other benefits of the TT award would you like to share with people who are considering applying?

The award creates a wider, national network of individuals who have the same level of passion for educational equity. I have developed relationships with educators who have expertise of other aspects of social justice education, and I have grown from them. I am deeply grateful for Teaching Tolerance and the many educators who work on a daily basis to reach a level that truly changes the way that teachers think about and deliver their craft.
